Metroid Dread...dead?

I did a rumor on a game entitled Metroid Dread, another 2d side scrolling Metroid game. Now I am hearing that the game, which did exist, has been axed. The game apparently got into some very early stages of development, and then the cord was cut. Was this game cancelled, did this game ever exist, is it still coming out!? I don't have any information that is concrete, all I can say is that we are back square one. I think it is pretty safe to say that we will see another Metroid sequel other then Metroid Prime 3...it is just a matter of when.
