J Allard praises/disses Revolution
Seems like the guys over at Microsoft love dishing out their thoughts on the Revolution. Microsoft bigwig J. Allard had a few things to say concerning the Revolution's controller in a 1up interview..
"I think it's well intentioned. I think it's great for them to say, 'We've got to make it more approachable."
After making his friendly statement, he starts to dig a little deeper and expresses some worries.
"I don't think that's the way you're going to play FIFA. I don't think it's the way you're going to play Madden. I don't think it's the way you're going to play racing games, I think the traditional controller for traditional categories is really going to be what drives that. I don't think most Electronic Arts games are going to be played with that thing. I think they're going to be designed for the classic controller."
While he doesn't bash the Revolution controller with those further statements, he argues that a traditional controller is going to make more sense for those games. I don't see any point in worrying about that, because as we all know, the Revolution will have a more traditional controller shell. Its hard to tell by those comments whether Mr. Allard means that EA will design games for a more traditional controller meaning the Xbox360 controller, or whether he is acknowledging the Revolution controller shell.
Next up is a comment on which I can't decide if it is just the writer of the article trying to be funny, or if it is something Mr. Allard actually said.
Most telling, however, is his comment about a possible Microsoft-driven response to Revolution's controller in the form of slapping a battery and radio on an Atari 2600 controller and claiming it's Xbox 360's 'simple controller.'
If Mr. Allard did say that, they it is an obviously him spitting in Nintendo's face. You can make up your mind on that comment. There weren't any direct quotes from Allard on that, so I find it a little suspicious.
The last thing Mr. Allard discussed was he was worried about how DVD movies would be handled on the Revolution.
"I don't know if I like the implementation because it ain't my remote. How am I going to watch a movie on Revolution? Am I going to have a different remote than that or am I going to have to use the four colored buttons?"
This is probably the dumbest thing I have ever heard concerning the Revolution. Personally, I could care less about how I watch DVDs on the Revolution, I am WAAAAAAAAAAY more interested in playing games. Chances are if you are tech savy enough to be buying a Revolution or some other game system, then you already have a DVD player of some sort. I can't understand why Mr. Allard would make this comment as a serious one...is he really all that worried about that?! Overall it seems that the whole Microsoft camp is very interested in what Nintendo is doing. Its a pretty hard thing to turn your competition on its ear, but Nintendo is doing just that.

This is not a dis from a Nintendo fanboy but Allard is an absolute idiot.
nicky hill is itching to discuss this topic on this weeks podcast...and he is echoing what you guys are saying.
Now that idiot is in charge of MS Entertainment. Ohh Noooeessss!!11!
Uh, about the DVD playing: you press a button which brings up an onscreen menu, you point and click. Or maybe you wave the controller to the right for fast forward and the to the left for rewind. I dunno, but it's really not that hard to imagine Nintendo coming up with a very easy and straightforward way of controlling the movies.
That guy is seriously a moron. He doesn't understand that this controller is giving us NEW WAYS to be playing games like FIFA and Madden or whatever...EA is a damn fine company, they can surely figure something out that will really make us feel in the game. And racing games?! That controller is MEANT for precise steering!! That was the first genre I actually thought about after FPS's when I heard about the controller. This guy can suck it.
Can you say "dick"? This guy is does not even know about the "shell"!!! No one has to worry about playing any type of genre on the Revolution. It really doesn't matter what he says, he will have to eat his words in the long run anyway...
Man, this is definately going to be the hot topic on the podcast...
Honestly we know that the Revolution will put fear into the hearts of 15 year old Macho Mature gamers.
Allard has lost his fucking mind.
He is having a fit because MS was convinced by Sony's arrogance that Nintendo didn't have anything but a tilt sensor or trackball; something they could imitate. Nintendo came out with a controller that can zoom in and out via pushing and pulling the remote in and out in 3d space. That is just one possible use for shooters.
The greatest thing is that E3 06 we will finally get the true REV controller. Not just the final design of the remote piece but the final redesign of the wavebird shell. It could simply be neutral colors with a kidney shaped b button and second z button. It could have a trackball. It could have scroll wheels on the face or shoulders. There is still plenty of room for innovation and evolution. The technology in the remote is the revolution.
